When do you think F1 was at its best from a purely aesthetic point of view? My personal opinion is that the last 90's cars are possibly the best looking ones, when he narrow wheel base rules came about in 98 the cars looked great and then got even better in 99. Personal favorite is certainly the 99 Mclaren. The cars looks uncluttered and the clean lines really worked.

I always loved the early Jordan cars - I think they were either first, or one of the first to go with the slightly raised nose. That plus the forward slanted air-box inlet gave it a real fighter jet kind of look for me.. Also the fact it wasn't plastered in sponsorship logos like the modern cars helped! The other one from a similar period which I really liked was the Ferrari 643 - again quite clean lines, and not too many logos and things all over it..
