Just how much attention do you pay to the current Ring lap records that every manufacture is trying to break, Honda has the front wheel drive record... although I'm sure Renault will steal it back again soon. Subaru has the fastest 4 door saloon, although that was set in a full on race car and I've lost track of all the other ones.
But just how bothered are you? For me I couldn't care less. My marque of choice (VW) will no doubt have a GTI to take the record again but even it was the slowest of all the hot hatches it wouldn't put me off buying one.
I think for me there are too many lap records coming that I just lose interest in them.
Your thoughts?

Couldn't really say I'm all that interested in the lap records at the ring, suppose it's quite nice to know the marquee of your choice has produced something special to get round it so quickly but I wouldn't say it's something to boast about unless your the one who set it!

I like the concept but don't take the times as any sort of indicator as to whether the car is any good or not. The Porsche 918 is an incredible car, no doubt very fast. But go and watch the lap... it's so boring, looks like a video game. The ZL1 1LE and even more so the Lambo Aventador laps are the total opposite, they are manic laps with drivers pushing right to the limit (and beyond!) in proper intimidating cars. One of the best videos on YouTube is the guy going under 10 minutes in his Citroen AX

One of the best videos on YouTube is the guy going under 10 minutes in his Citroen AX I have to say after been to the ring around 10 times it can become addictive, my first time there I met a fella Mick Wilkin who was building a Mk1 escort to beat Zakspeeds lap record. He was 64 at the time and it was recorded and was done on an open day in a N/A Cosworth engine and un-arched car. Classic Ford and Retro ford were out there and he beat it 8mins 42👍 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'd look at it as an achievement but it isn't everything

I was there on the day Chevrolet we're out to set the record with the Camaro. The driver was on the absolute limit of grip when he came past us. It was pretty special to watch. a few years back I had a bone stock mini cooper s (r53 supercharged thing) and at the time I wasn't sure much would keep up with it around the back roads where I live - I know the roads well, the suspension was spot on for them, and you could throw it about like a mental case and it just gripped and gripped. it was a load of crap on the motorway though, and my z4mc was way faster on a smooth a-road... ...then I got f****ng DEMOLISHED one night by some lunatic in a bowler wildcat - he literally jumped clear about 30ft off the canal bridge along side me and disappeared up the road! that "car" was prob even worse on a motorway than my mini, but would be considerably faster across a ploughed field than my z4.. its horses for courses and while I find some of the outright records pretty amazing i'm not sure its relevant to a golf gti or similar. as we've seen recently, if you want a golf that's really fast around the ring, pull the back seats out, fit stiffer suspension, sticky tyres and a "clubsport" sticker you're golden! is it a better day to day road car for the average man in the street than a standard gti? I doubt it, but for right now, ring bragging rights seem to be worth their weight in gold for the marketing people!

I enjoy watching the videos that the manufacturers post afta they make a lap time but it realy doesn't bother me in the slightest, ok so honda has the current record but that doesn't mean squat, it doesn't mean if you buy one then you can drive anywhere near as good as there test driver lol, to some people tho it's sooo important so they can play tops trumps with there mates down the pub lol

I wouldn't buy a car if it was 5 seconds quicker round the ring than something else. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I suppose it is an interesting way to put a figure on how well a car will lap though. 'A 1:20 lap round Donington national' doesn't have the same ring (pardon the pun) to it.

I think the Nurburgring has a lot of variation and bumps and ridges and things to it which make it a unique challenge and maybe more like a B road than a normal race track, but there still HUGE sections that are very high speed and completely unrealistic for comparing road cars.. maybe cadwell or blyton or the infield at rockingham would be better bench marks of actual road driving?! 😂
