Seems like its a done deal now.
I was really rooting for the Honda partnership to come good, is it the right step for Mclaren or have they been too quick to jump ship to another struggling engine supplier?

I think its the right decision for the current engine/rules set. Honda we're behind from the start and always will be with the current power unit regs. I think when the 2021 rules come out they will be better placed to close the gap to Merc & Ferrari when everyone starts a fresh.
I think Renault is all Mclaren could get to be honest. I hope it does push them up the grid next for next year, I really want to see Alonso back up the front challenging for podiums and wins. Plus they have one of the best young drivers to come through for a while in Vandoorne and its a shame to see both of them at the back.
On the back of all this is looks like Red Bull are set for Honda engines in 2019 with Renault wanting to end its partnership.... I can't see Ricciardo & Verstappen looking forward to that. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see one or both of them jump ship at the end of next season.

That's my concern with them going to renault, they aren't going to get the performance advantage that they need to get the sponsors back. They will end up the fourth best team behind Merc, Ferrari and Red bull. I understand why they wanted to jump ship but surely this ship isn't going to take them where they want to be? I am interested in what Red Bull will be doing in the future with Honda, they've denied that Aston Martin are an option for an engine supplier at least until the new rules come out, but if they start working closely with Honda could they be the new Honda works team?

I think that is the long term view for Red Bull, Torro Rosso are certainly the guinea pigs here, if it fails then its nothing really lost for Red Bull they will move forward with their Aston Martin plans.
I think Mclaren will be going down the route of building their own engine, if the new regs can show a reduction in costs with the use of some standardised parts then that will open the engine market up like we've not seen for a long while. I genuinely think we need 2 more engine manufactures to get the sport back to wear it should be, Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault, Honda.... Possible Audi/VW, Porsche, Aston Martin, Mclaren even Cosworth have been involved in the meetings about new engines. The future is certainly bright.
