Lupo gti's are expensive I think, well last time I looked anyway. I would seriously consider the Polo 1.4 16v 100bhp or the Fiesta ST. Make it your own. Make a well sorted handling car and worry about power later.
Or Twingo... if cheap enough

like all e36's they have weak cooling systems. the 6 cylinders get a bad name because people run them until they over heat rather than replace the rad or water pump, we have even put an engine into a car that supposedly had a weak headgasket (we needed to get the car back on the road) we also fit an alloy rad and a new water pump and its done about 10 track days since and not over heated once... if you're going to build a track car its advisable to replace things like that rad and water pump anyway so you won't have any problems!

I must have just been unlucky then, just assumed they were bad. I can't and wouldn't disagree with you, quite obvious you know your stuff. Its always put me off buying another BMW sadly, although I really would like one as a track car after seeing and hearing F0xy's BMW. So your saying a decent rad and pump, probably a good oil cooler and it would be just fine? That seems so simple and makes for a good rwd toy.

That silver saloon is a beast of a motor, would love to get my car half as good as that thing! I have recently bought a silver saloon as a track car that I'm hoping to use as a test bed to fit a m54b30 out of an e46 330. M52 engines are getting hard to get hold of now so it seems to make sense to get my head around fitting the m54 as they have a better head design, inlet and cams than the m52's and its already a 3.0 so no need to mess about building a stroked M52 and once the wiring is sussed its just as simple to fit. I do think they make brilliant track cars with not a great deal of modifications, when I first started using the 328 as a dedicated track car it only had a bucket seat, some jom coilovers and an lsd and it wasn't much worse than it is now I think the 6 cylinders are known for having problems simply because when they have been hot they are scrap because they have an alloy block whereas the 4 cylinders are cast iron. when a 4 cylinders starts overheating people do a headgasket check and its normally fine so they replace the knackered rad/waterpump/stat and the engine is good to go again but a 6 cylinder overheats and the block and head warps so when you do a headgasket check its obviously already gone so they scrap the car rather than replace the item that was the problem in the first place. you don't need to spend a fortune on an alloy rad tbh, we only fit it because we had it to hand. The car in my signature just uses a standard 6cylinder aircon rad with fresh coolant and a fairly new pump and stat and its never once started to show hot. I really don't look after it like i should either but its still going strong

So tempted to buy an E46 330 as I do miss the RWD. Thing is, I haven't had my fun from this Golf yet.
We'll see....
Hope to meet you on track one day #peace

Hope to meet you on track one day #peace I'm a VW man at heart i have a mk2 golf project thats my long term love. the 330's are awesome on the road but feel very heavy on track, i drove one we had around snetterton and got carried away with myself down the long straight and tried to brake where i would in the e36 and very nearly ran out of track I think they will be awesome with some weight out though! I would love to drive one of the 330 challenge cars, they look great fun!

I currently have a Mk3 gti 8v but had concidered using it on track, it's just a tad heavy and rather under powered lol

FINALLY made a purchase!!! It's fwd, light weight, cheapish, good handling, not the fastest car but nippy and with loads of potential !
I will be spending the winter building the car ready for next year, I'm hoping to have it ready for around March time
